As its name suggests, Laghu Sundarakāṇḍam - Nitya Pārāyaṇa Saṅgrahaḥ is a book intended to find its place not merely on a library shelf, but in the pūjā room—as a companion in daily prayer, pārāyaṇa, upāsanā, and spiritual practice.
For countless generations, the recitation of the Sundarakāṇḍa has occupied a cherished place in the Hindu tradition. It has been recited for iha-para śreyas—for auspiciousness and spiritual welfare both iha, in this earthly life, and para, beyond it. The sacred account of Śrī Hanuman's journey in the service of Śrī Rāma continues to inspire faith, courage, devotion, perseverance, and complete surrender to the Divine.
Today, however, preserving and transmitting this tradition to future generations presents a new challenge. With younger generations increasingly educated through English-medium institutions in India, and with many families now living throughout the world, direct access to Sanskrit and the traditional practice of Rāmāyaṇa pārāyaṇa is gradually becoming more difficult. Laghu Sundarakāṇḍam was composed with this concern at heart.
It presents a concise yet complete narration of the Sundarakāṇḍa in Sanskrit, composed with great reverence, devotion, upāsanā, and sādhanā. Throughout its composition, every effort has been made to remain faithful to the spirit of Ādikavi Vālmīki—preserving, to the greatest extent possible, the bhāva (spirit and sentiment), artha (meaning), rasa (aesthetic and emotional essence), śabda (expression and sound), and chandas (metrical beauty) of the original Śrīmad Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa.
The work brings together the concluding five sargas of the Kiṣkindhākāṇḍa, all sixty-eight sargas of the Sundarakāṇḍa, and the opening sarga of the Yuddhakāṇḍa. Thus, a narrative extending across more than 3,000 original ślokas has been carefully condensed into over 400 Sanskrit verses arranged in seven chapters, while preserving the continuity and essential substance of Vālmīki's narrative.
Each chapter is designed to require approximately 10-20 minutes for recitation, making it possible to complete the Laghu Sundarakāṇḍam comfortably over seven days as part of one's regular spiritual practice. For those unable to devote even this amount of time—or for recitation during periods of difficulty, prayer, or special spiritual observance—the book also contains the Aṣṭottaraśata Sundarakāṇḍam, a selection of 108 verses that may be recited in approximately twenty minutes.
To make the work accessible to younger generations and readers throughout the world, the Sanskrit verses are accompanied by simple IAST transliteration and clear English meanings, enabling even those who cannot read the original script to participate in the recitation and understand its essential meaning.
This work has undergone a rigorous process of review and refinement under the guidance of senior Sanskrit scholars. Among those who contributed to this process is Śrīmān Rangi Satyanarayana Sharma, an accomplished Sanskrit scholar, poet, and teacher with decades of experience. The work has further received the blessings of one of the eminent Sanskrit poets and Avadhānis of our time, Mahākavi, Padma Shri Brahmaśrī Dr. Madugula Nagaphani Sharma, and was blessed and inaugurated by His Holiness Śrī Vidyā śaṅkara Bhārati Swamiji, Śaṅkarācārya of Śrī Puṣpagiri Mahāsaṃsthānam.
The Rāmāyaṇa itself teaches us the greatness of even the smallest service performed for Śrī Rāma Kārya. In the same spirit, this work is offered not as a literary achievement, but as a humble service at the feet of Śrī Sītā-Rāma and Śrī Hanuman.
May all those who contribute in any way to preserving this sacred tradition receive the grace and blessings of Śrī Hanuman. May this small effort help carry the sacred Rāmakathā from one generation to the next, from one home to another, and from one heart to another.
